Water Damage From Toilet

Updated: Jan 16

Your toilet is used just about every day so it's not surprising that toilets are common sources of leaks and water damage to homes. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 may have some type of leak. You don’t need to be a plumber to find most toilet leaks. About ten minutes after flushing, remove the tank cover to inspect the water level. If the water level is at the top of the overflow tube, you have a leak. Alternative way to check: Put drops of food coloring in the tank. If the color appears in the bowl within 10 -15 minutes, there's a leak. If the toilet valve makes a semi-regular or constant hissing or gurgling sound, there's likely a significant leak. If you find you have a leak shut the water off to the toilet.
